Satmap Systems Ltd was founded in October 2005 to exploit opportunities in the outdoor GPS hiking, cycling, marine and other related markets. In October 2007, the company launched its ground breaking, next-generation, handheld GPS mapping device, the Active 10. Powerful, yet simple to use, this mapping system has received outstanding critical reviews and has won several awards. It is now widely used by outdoor sports enthusiasts and has been adopted by the professional users in mountain rescue teams, charitable societies, the emergency services and by military personnel.


Embedded Engineer - January 2012

Role Description

Are you excited by handheld devices and the latest technology?

Would you relish the opportunity to be a key person in determining the direction our products take?

If so, our Embedded Engineer role, based at our offices in Leatherhead, could be perfect for you. Working as part of a small team, you will be responsible for developing our software to keep us ahead of the game and responding to changes requested by our client base. Initially you will work alongside our development team, Cambridge Design Partnership, based in a rural location close to Cambridge, spending time understanding how the Active 10 intrinsically works. Before taking up the role at our HQ in Leatherhead, Surrey. You need to be keen to get to grips with our product and those of our competitors.

Qualifications and Experience

Required

  1. Excellent first degree in software engineering or a related discipline.
  2. Expert in programming in C++ and Windows CE.
  3. Embedded systems ranging from microcontrollers to SBC’s interfacing to raw I/O, GPS, LCD and touch screens.
  4. Communications protocols
  5. Creating reliable code by design and using best practices

Beneficial

  1. A breadth of other technologies - C#, Lua Script and Objective C.
  2. Experience of working with portable satellite gadgets / smart phones
  3. Experience of geographical data and imagery
  4. A good understanding of GIS concepts such as datums and projections

Personal Attributes
The role would suit:

  1. A person with proven conceptual and problem solving capability
  2. An ability to communicate and document technical details
  3. An interest in gadgets and cutting edge technology especially in the mobile/outdoor market would be advantageous.
  4. An interest in outdoor sports is also an advantage.

Salary £40,000 - 50,000 negotiable.

Application Development Manager - January 2012 (Filled)

Role Description

Working with our management team, you will be responsible for bespoke application development primarily for the web. This forms part of the on-going development of our product suite as well as responding to our clients’ requests. You will take the lead on projects with responsibility for project planning, overseeing, writing and delivering projects in a timely fashion from inception to Beta testing to release.

This role is responsible for Satmap’s entire web presence, using mainly .NET and some PHP. You will ensure that our website is up to date. This will require updating page content, maintaining the Ecommerce system, helping create our on-line newsletters and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation around the world. You will also manage and provide 2nd line support to our customers on live web applications that use Bing and Google Maps.

This role also covers the general management of internal servers, externally hosted web servers, domain names and SSL certificates.

You will manage the IT development team comprising a .net developer and software engineer. Internal IT support and the management of the external IT support organisation are also under your remit. You will provide some desktop support, server maintenance, monitor backups, aid in domain management and support internal systems.

Skills and Qualifications

  1. Experience of commercial web application development is required
  2. Programming in ASP.NET, C#, TSQL and Web APIs is essential
  3. Proven experience writing HTML, CSS and JavaScript (JQuery) is essential
  4. Experience using ASP.NET MVC 3 and Silverlight would be beneficial
  5. Good knowledge of IT infrastructure including Servers, Desktops, Domains, DNS and VMWare. Experience with MS Exchange, Sophos Anti-Virus and Veritas BackupExec would be beneficial, but is not essential
  6. Some mobile application development would be useful
  7. Project and Team Management experience
  8. Proven ability to multitask and deliver projects on time
  9. Experience using Bing/Google Maps (AJAX/Silverlight) is a bonus
  10. WMS / GIS knowledge would be useful
  11. Knowledge of Red Technology’s TradeIT platform would be useful

This role will suit:

  1. Someone with experience with user centred design and commercial web development
  2. A creative person with attention to detail, who has innovative ideas and an aptitude for problem solving
  3. A person with a genuine interest in the web and surrounding technologies – ideally keeping up to date with industry developments and trends
  4. Someone with a commercial background
  5. An interest in outdoor sports is an advantage particularly walking and cycling.
